Medical Argon

Argon (Ar) is a colourless, tasteless and odourless noble gas, present in the air with a percentage of less than 1%. It is chemically inert and therefore non-toxic. The Medical Argon supplied by Messer meets the requirements of the European Pharmacopeia and is registered by Messer as a medical device in the countries listed below.

There are different fields for the application of Medical Argon:

For medical instruments/ devices using contactless methods of APC (argon plasma coagulation) and APP (cold plasma method).
In cryotherapy for the destruction of diseased cells, in particular the prostate and the kidney. The decompression of 300 to 240 bar of Argon makes it possible to produce the temperature necessary for the cooling of cryosurgery needles. The gas is used as an accessory to the cryotherapy device and does not come into contact with the patient.
In eye surgeries, Medical Argon is used as a resonator gas in laser devices to create a laser beam. Medical Argon as resonator gas could also be used for other laser applications in medicine.

Messer offers Medical Argon as a medical device in different package sizes: 2L, 5L, 10L, 20L, and 50L with filling pressure of 200 or 300 bar at 15°C. Please direct queries to our local subsidiaries for product availability in your region.

Medical Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide is a colourless, odorless, non-flammable and an asphyxiating gas. During expansion, carbon dioxide can be cooled down below sublimation temperature. The Medical Carbon Dioxide supplied by Messer meets the requirements of the European Pharmacopeia and is registered by Messer as a medical device in various Messer’s subsidiaries.

Medical Carbon Dioxide can be applied in various indication areas:

  • Internal usage: the gas is used in gaseous form as an insufflation gas for minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopy, endoscopy and arthroscopy to enlarge and stabilise the body cavities. This results in a better view of the surgical field.
  • External usage: in cryotherapy and cryoneurolysis, liquified gas at -76 degrees Celsius is applied to the skin for pain relief. In addition, the product can be used for carbon dioxide baths as a remedy against low hypertension, vascular diseases, cardiovascular disorders etc. to generate analgesic effects and increase blood circulation.

The Messer subsidiaries listed below supply Medical Carbon Dioxide as a medical device in various cylinder sizes in kilograms for the local businesses.

Messer supplies one of its long-term cooperative customers, Cryonic Medical SAS with the product for treating pain caused by sports injuries. By using cold (CO2), pain can be treated effectively and successfully in the field of therapeutics, sports and equine.

Please note that “Carbon Dioxide MESSER” is registered as a medicinal product (Drug) in some countries. Please visit our Medicinal Gases page for your local businesses.

Medical Helium

The Medical Helium supplied by Messer meets the requirements of the European Pharmacopeia and is registered by Messer as a medical device in various European countries.

Medical Helium is used in cryotherapy to warm up diseased zones previously treated by freezing (use of the Joule-Thomson effect of Argon gas). Rapid freezing/ slow thawing successive phases obtains the destruction of diseased cells. The decompression of 300 to 240 bars of helium makes it possible to produce the positive temperature necessary for the heating of the cryosurgical needles. Gas in cylinders is used as an accessory to the cryotherapy device and does not come into contact with the patient.

Medical Helium is supplied in 50L cylinders with 300 bar. The gas can be bought in the countries listed below.

Medical Lung Function Gases

Messer supplies Lung Function Gases as a certified medical product. The product is registered as a medical device in Hungary and Poland.

Please note that in other European countries, Lung Function Gases are considered a medicinal product. In general, Lung Function Gases as a drug have to be prescribed by a physician.

Lung Function Gases as medical device, containing a tracer gas, are used during lung function tests. The exhaled gas is analysed and differences in the concentration of the tracer gas can be used to measure pulmonary function, lung blood flow and cardiac index.

When used in conjunction with diagnostic equipment, these gas mixtures measure different functions of the lungs, to help assessing patients with serious lung or cardiac disorders such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or interstitial lung disease.

Messer’s clients mainly order 10L and/ or 31,5L cylinders. The composition and the concentration of the Lung Function Gases can be varied and adapted to customers’ needs. Please contact your local subsidiary for further inquiries.

Medical Liquid Nitrogen

At normal ambient temperatures, nitrogen is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas. Under atmospheric pressure, nitrogen is liquid at a temperature of minus 196°C. The Medical Liquid Nitrogen supplied by Messer meets the requirements of the European Pharmacopeia and is registered by Messer as a medical device in Messer’s subsidiaries below.

Medical Liquid Nitrogen is widely used in cryo-medicine. With a temperature of -196°C, nitrogen as a medical device is ideal for various cold applications, for instance:

In cryotherapy (cold wind treatment) for preventing rheumatic diseases. Medical Nitrogen is successfully used for local cold-air applications and cold-air application for the whole body.
In cryosurgery for the operation of cryosurgical instruments
In cryo-preservation for freezing preservation of biological materials such as cells, tissue, blood, seeds, etc. Since nitrogen is also non-toxic, tasteless and chemically inert, it offers optimal conditions for the preservation of living cells and biological tissue.

Messer offers Medical Liquid Nitrogen as a medical device in the countries listed below. The product can be supplied in different cryogenic vessels: 2L, 5L, 10L, 150L, 180L,240L and storage tanks

Medical Synthetic Air

Synthetic air is a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen. Both components are colourless and odorless compressed gases with high purity. The Medical Synthetic Air supplied by Messer meets the requirements of the European Pharmacopeia and is registered by Messer as a medical device in various European countries.

In hospitals, Medical Synthetic Air is used as an energy source in order to run medical devices e.g. driller in surgery rooms or other pneumatic instruments.

Medical Synthetic Air is obtained by mixing Oxygen (21%) and Nitrogen balance. Messer supplies Medical Synthetic Air.
