Messer Hardware

Reference Project

A prototype of this system was delivered for the project "AmpaCity" of RWE Deutschland AG. RWE installed the world's longest superconducting cable here. It can transmit an output of approx. 40 MW and is integrated in the power supply of the city center of Essen. The manufacturer of the cable is the company Nexans. The project is scientifically supported by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and publicly funded by the project sponsor Jülich (PTJ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). The system went into operation at the beginning of 2014 and since then supplies the city of Essen with electric energy.

The AmpaCity project has been awarded the 2015 Innovation Award for Climate and Environment by the Federal Environment Ministry.

Installation of the cooling system in the RWE substation Herkules, Essen
The "U-bend" of the cable cryostat is delivered. It compensates the length of the cable when cooling down to -206 °C
Special tank system for the AmpaCity project: Here, the liquid nitrogen cools the superconducting cable and a current limiter at different pressure levels. In addition, gaseous nitrogen is withdrawn for the supply of the pneumatic system control.
Assembly of the U-bend required at the cable end for length compensation during cooling
